Great night at Silverbacks Park.

Can’t wait until Saturday. Just wish my #$%$#% new jersey would arrive.

Nasco, who was first discovered by the team during their January open combine, has taken an unconventional path to signing his first professional contract. A former All-American at Andrew Junior College and an all-conference player at Birmingham Southern, Nasco battled injuries after his college career before eventually taking a job as a police officer for the Gordon County Sheriff’s Department in Calhoun.

The 6-foot-3 goalkeeper spent a season with the Panama City Pirates (PDL) in 2009 before training with the Chicago Fire (MLS), Puerto Rico Islanders (NASL), and Real Maryland Monarchs (PDL).

It was in January when Nasco caught the eye of the Silverbacks coaching staff at the team’s first open combine.

Dare to dream.

It is safe to say this is an organization with its feet on the ground, but it’s aspirations in the clouds. Those making the decisions have made a conscious effort to make sure the franchise is financially stable, forward thinking, but most importantly fan friendly. It has a great place to call home and a growing fan base that is ready for a professional soccer team to win it over. As the attendance grows and the on-field product increases, so should the attention that Atlanta gets as a viable future home of an MLS franchise.
The new Atlanta Silverbacks debuted on Saturday, April 9, 2011. They lost 2-1 to the NSC Minnesota Stars, but more than 3,500 excited fans were there. Average attendance has dipped to around three thousand, but that still puts the Silverbacks third in the league, despite a seven-game winless streak to start the year.
Great piece on the local side. We’ll be renewing our season tickets. Hope for great things in the future.

Details are few and far between, but word broke this morning that the United States Soccer Federation has expressed concern over the North American Soccer League for sanctioning Division II professional soccer in the US for the 2011 season. According to sources, the federation held a board meeting by phone on Thursday where it was decided that the NASL has at this time not met enough of the new D2 standards that were set in August of 2010 for sanctioning of the league. What exactly this means is still unclear and leaves more questions than answers.

This confuses me. While I tend to agree that the apparent structure and reliance on Traffic Sports (now involved in at least 3 franchises) is troubling, the alternative right now appears to be no second division and no soccer this summer in a number of large U.S. markets. And that doesn’t seem to be an outcome either the USSF or fans should want.

I hope this can be worked out. I look forward to seeing the Silverbacks play again this summer.
